In August, the University of Montana School of Journalism hosted The Montana Photo Workshop, an intensive photojournalism program designed for 16 emerging photographers and student photojournalists with fewer than three years of professional experience. Over four days, these participants collaborated with experienced instructors from the University of Montana and its partners in a hands-on visual storytelling workshop.
The workshop’s mission was to educate and inspire young storytellers by providing them with professional mentorship and meaningful real-world experience as they document diverse stories within the Missoula community. Emphasizing high ethical standards, the program aims to equip participants with new skills, techniques, and the confidence to tell compelling stories visually.
Participants were divided into four groups, each focused on a unique theme. One group, in particular, explored the challenges and successes related to affordable housing, working closely with community members to document and share these stories.
Missoula ROCs, including Bonnie’s Place Community and Buena Vista Community, participated in this opportunity. Over three days, two students immersed themselves in each community, building connections with individuals, families, and board members. In one memorable instance, Rae Lund, Sandy Powell, and Sarah Powell from Bonnie’s Place Community gave student photographer Coral a guided tour, proudly showcasing what makes their community special.
The students also met with NeighborWorks Executive Director Kaia Peterson to gain a broader understanding of the ROCs’ mission and impact.
In September, the workshop culminated in a public showcase at the University of Montana, where participants presented their work to both the story subjects and the wider community.
Special thanks go to Jeremy Lurgio, Professor of Photojournalism and Multimedia at the University of Montana, for connecting students with these communities and demonstrating the power of collaborative storytelling. Stay tuned for the next ROC Newsletter to see photos and stories from this event.
