Affordable, Sustainable, Accessible
The biennial Montana Housing Conference that occurred June 15 – 17, 2010 in Helena attracted about 190 attendees and presenters.
The conference was lauded for the intensive training, the professional networking opportunities and the top quality of the speakers. Speakers included a national accessibility expert, a top HUD official, other representatives from HUD and the Federal Reserve, a housing search specialist, a state economist, plus lending, manufactured housing, green-building, multi-family and single-family housing specialists.
In addition to offering specific training to address the newest rules and regulations in the housing and lending areas, the conference also served up workshops that were informative, thought-provoking and visionary.
The conference — Affordable, Accessible, Sustainable Housing — presented topics including: Fair Housing, Foreclosures, Community Land Trusts, Multifamily Housing, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, issues related to Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA)and the Security and Freedom Ensured (SAFE) Act, Decommissioning of Mobile Homes, and Resident Owned Communities.
Because of the contributions of sponsors and scholarship donors, everyone who wanted to attend was able to do so on scholarship if he or she was unable to pay.

Sheila Rice, Rick Garcia, Barb Ferguson
Rick Garcia, Regional Administrator, Region VIII, Denver, Colorado along with Assistant Secretary John Trasvina, Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Washington, D.C. were honored guest speakers at the 2010 Montana Housing Partnership Conference on June 16, that brought together realtors, builders, housing counselors, community partners, local and state officials in Helena, MT. Mr. Garcia received an award on behalf of the Department for HUD's 30 years of support and partnerships with NeighborWorks Montana, formally Neighborhood Housing Services.
In addition to receiving an award, Garcia honored five Housing Counselors across the state of Montana for their outstanding work in homeownership education, rental, foreclosure and housing counseling.
Mr. Garcia met with Tribal Leaders to discuss off reservation discrimination and strategize ways for the department to partner with the tribes to address this. He also met with Carroll College for a discussion about University Partnerships. The Regional Administrator joined a bus tour provided by the Montana Home Choice Coalition, and visited Don LiePier one of several new homeowners recognized on this tour.
